Trine (Anne-Kathrine) Hvoslef-Eide
Dr. Trine Hvoslef-Eide is an associate professor with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences at Ås, Norway . For the past four years (2005-Sept 1st 2009) she was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB). She has been a faculty member of the UMB since January 1997. She has been a research fellow of UMB since 1989.
During her period as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Studies, she has been a strong advocate of increasing the international impact on the Norwegian University of Life Sciences; she has initiated several Master programs entirely in English, and she has facilitated more international students to enroll at the UMB. She has been the Chair of the National Board for Higher Education in Norway for four years, the Chair for the Study Committee in the Nordic University Network in 2007 and actively promoted student exchange to and from Norway. The university has active exchange agreements with more than 80 universities abroad, with Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nepal as the most active ones. The exchange between Eastern Africa and Norway is high and reciprocal.
When the Gene Technology Act came into force in Norway in 1993, Trine Hvoslef-Eide was appointed advisor on gene technology in the Ministry of Environment. During that period she served as the Norwegian head of delegation to EU’s Committee of Competent Authorities on GMO and the equivalent Committee in OECD. She has also served on advisory boards on GMOs in Norway. Her research in cell- and tissue culture have turned in the direction of developing protocols for genetic transformation of plants and she teaches these courses at UMB.
Her professional background is research in cell and tissue culture, gene technology and lately more fundamental developmental biology using biotechnology tools. She graduated with a Master of Horticulture from the Norwegian University of agriculture (now UMB) in 1983 and took her PhD in Floriculture, spesialising in cell- and tissue culture there in 1989. She has taught on a number of courses and been a supervisor for more than 20 Master and four PhD students, several of which have been from African countries.
Trine Hvoslef-Eide’s research and educational interests involves both the minute details on how specific genes are involved in the abscission of flowers, to the more holistic picture, right up to the scientific issues that are more political; like the use of GMOs for a better future, but with a cautious mind. She feels strongly about educating Africa, enabling Africa to feed its own population and create wealth through the use of horticulture and agriculture.
