PJ-002313: IITA Regional Approach to Select Market Demanded Cassava Varieties with Combined Resistance to Cassava Mosaic Disease and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (Genetic Improvement in Cassava)

This project will unify cassava breeding activities involving the four IITA hubs in West, Central, South and East Africa building on genetic resources, genomics information and breeding populations developed in each of the hubs. While breeding must address all three key constraint areas, this project will first focus on cooperative breeding for the CMD, CBSD and whitefly complex that affects all cassava growing regions in Africa. Conventional breeding will be supplemented by development of a genome marker array to implement marker assisted selection CMD and CBSD using QTL markers developed in supporting projects.
