 Biological control
The overall SARRNET objective has been to develop effective intervention technologies encouraging farmers to adopt the Ecologically Sustainable Plant Protection (ESPP) to manage economically important diseases and pests. The release of Epidinocarsis lopezi by IITA on cassava mealybug is still showing successful results. The development of tolerant varieties to cassava mosaic disease in the region is another milestone. Also four species of predatory mites have been released by IITA in Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia to control cassava green mite. One of them, Typhlodromalus aripo, that was introduced from IITA in 1997 into the region is showing positive results. Continued redistribution of the phytoseiid is currently in progress.
