Cassava is a major food crop in sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the world. Vast potential growing areas and increased demand for food and feed open challenges for increased production. A limitation, however, is the low multiplication ratio of 1:10 using traditional production methods, which results in little progress in replacing susceptible or nonadapted varieties, or in expanding cassava into new areas.
Rapid multiplication techniques are known and have been the subject of training courses and extension campaigns. The pocketbook on "Rapid multiplication of cassava" illustrates the principle of these techniques to extension agents, farmers, and researchers for easy application in the field.
The pocketbook is a combination of IITA Research Guide (IRG) 51, authored by former IITA scientist John Otoo, and a slide set based on IRG 51. Each page shows a color reproduction of a slide on top, and the corresponding text from IRG 51 below.
IITA is working on the French translation of the pocketbook. Audiovisual products deriving from IRG 51 are a slide set, a video tape, and an interactive CD-ROM (all in preparation). An electronic version of IRG 51 is available on this Website.
The pocketbook was produced by the Training Program in collaboration with the Information Services Program, IITA.
