Aflasafe Technical Transfer and Commercialization (ATTC)

Goals

Aflatoxin is a poison which affects approximately 25% of the world’s food supply, and disproportionately impacts the poor. IITA has developed a field-applied biocontrol product, aflasafe, which reduces aflatoxin contamination 80% – 99% from farm to plate, and this grant aims to facilitate the manufacturing and distribution of aflasafe at a commercial scale in eleven African countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, The Gambia, Uganda and Zambia.

Expected results

  • Farmland treated with Aflasafe by farmers 18 months from project inception: 100,000 ha
  • Farmland treated with Aflasafe by farmers by project end: 500,000 ha
  • Number of Tech transfer agreement with entities signed for production: To be decided following strategy development and validation for each country.
  • Number of Tech transfer agreement signed with entities for distribution: To be decided following strategy development and validation for each country
  • Number of Aflasafe manufacturing plants established: To be decided following strategy development and validation for each country
  • Number of distribution partners contracted to sell aflasafe: To be decided following strategy development and validation for each country
