Aflasafe Technology Transfer and Commercialization (ATTC)

The objective of this project is to facilitate the responsible transfer of the aflasafe technology to private sector manufacturers and distributors or, where appropriate, to governments, in order for the product to be widely adopted by smallhollder farmers. This widespread use of aflasafe would significantly improve the safety of these key staple food crops, as well as unlock premium formal markets, both domestic and international, which test for aflatoxin contamination and, as such, are today often closed to smallholder production.

IITA has developed a field-applied biocontrol product, aflasafe, which reduces aflatoxin contamination 80% – 99% from farm to plate, and this grant aims to facilitate the manufacturing and distribution of aflasafe at a commercial scale in eleven African countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, The Gambia, Uganda and Zambia.
