Banana fungal & bacterial wilt (Foc/Bacteria)

Project goal

The proposal sets out to improve our understanding of the epidemiology of banana wilts within the context of an interregional harmonization of approaches to control these diseases.

Main objectives/expected outcomes
  • To harness information on the epidemiology and management of fungal and bacterial wilts in different regions—to develop best management practices and avoidance strategies.
  • To map banana susceptibility to wilt strains/races—identifying resistant varieties.
  • To develop and appraise science-based tools to ensure country readiness for exclusion and containment in the areas where the wilts are not yet present.
  • Our proposed research will inform field-scale management of banana wilts along with tools to inform regional scale containment approaches. This will be communicated and disseminated through existing banana research networks and knowledge exchange mechanisms.
