Exploiting induced mutations to unearth molecular associations for resistance to Maruca pod borer and striga resistance in cowpea, Vigna unguiculata

Project’s Goal

The goal of this project is to develop enhanced cowpea varieties resistant to Maruca pod borer and striga through genetic mutation and SNP identification.

Expected Result

  • Identified novel sources of resistance to Maruca pod borer.
  • Identified molecular markers associated with resistance to Maruca pod borer, establishing a marker-assisted breeding platform.
  • Generated and characterized populations with novel variations for striga resistance in cowpeas.
