Ntawuruhunga Pheneas is a Plant breeder / Agronomist at IITA Zambia. He is also the Regional Coordinator of the Southern Africa Root Crop Research Network (SARRNET) which covers SADC countries. Before joining IITA, he was based in Uganda as the Regional Coordinator of the East Africa Root Crop Research Network (EARRNET) covering Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. EARRNET, a sister network to SARRNET, was coordinated in collaboration with the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). He has long experience in coordinating R4D regional projects and working with national agriculture research systems (NARS) while strengthening their capacities. He has also extensive experience working in multidisciplinary teams developing cassava germplasm resistant to cassava mosaic disease pandemic for improved cassava production. Pheneas obtained his Ph.D. in Agronomy/breeding from Makerere University while working with IITA in Uganda. After completion of his studies in 2000, he worked as a consultant at IITA/ESARC for the breeding program with responsibility of implementing the cassava mosaic disease project and restoration of the cassava national program project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
