A new book, titled “Critical issues in plant health: 50 years of research in African agriculture,” has just been released. Published by Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing, the book focuses on plant health issues which play a major role in the overall food production in Africa, affecting both quality and quantity of crop yields.
Over the past 50 years, IITA has been at the fore of research on plant health issues in Africa ranging from the safe handling and movement of germplasm and seed to identifying and managing threats to crops in the region.
IITA has developed a reputation as an organization that provides equal opportunities for every willing person to learn and grow.
NAIROBI (Kenya) – The CGIAR Research Program on Maize (MAIZE) has announced the launch of the 2019 MAIZE Youth Innovators Awards – Africa. These awards recognize the contributions of young women and men below 35 years of age who are implementing innovations in African maize-based agri-food systems, including research-for-development, seed systems, agribusiness, and sustainable intensification.
IITA has lifted 7.2 million Africans out of poverty through its research innovations.
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has agreed to support the dissemination of improved technologies on weed control and other agricultural innovations to farmers, as part of efforts to bring about agricultural transformation in Africa. Chief Obasanjo declared his position when he received a delegation comprising Bayer and IITA officials in Ogun State.
By 2018 IITA Socioeconomics and Natural Resource Management teams estimate that the Institute would have already lifted 7.2 million people out of poverty and rehabilitated 875,500 ha of degraded land.
