IITA Director General visits Uganda station
30 January 2025

IITA Director General and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, Dr Simeon Ehui, recently visited IITA-Uganda’s Sendusu station, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to advancing agricultural innovation. A key highlight of his visit was the innovative cassava stem multiplication tunnel, a groundbreaking system inspired by the Kitovu Jani innovation—an adaptation of Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics technology. This pioneering solution has effectively tackled the longstanding challenge of cassava planting material shortages, accelerating the evaluation of new cassava breeding products and enhancing food security and farmer livelihoods across Africa.

He also visited the Tissue Culture Lab, Sendusu Science building, Molecular Lab, and Pathology-Nematology Lab.

Dr Ehui’s visit underscored the critical role of teamwork, resource mobilization, and strategic partnerships in driving agricultural transformation. His engagement with scientists, staff and partners reinforced IITA’s vision of leveraging innovation to sustainably improve food systems across the continent. As IITA continues to lead in research and technology adoption, such visits strengthen collaboration and progress toward a more food-secure future for Africa.
